So “Donald of Orange” has revoked the US’s environment protection laws of 2009 that reduce pollution. Apparently it’s part of the ‘Green New Scam’ (was there ever a Green Old Scam?), and it’s made me start to think what other ‘scams’ could be reversed?
Maybe we could make smoking freely available to all, even the youngest, because the smoking lobby denied for years it was harmful so therefore it is not harmful? And how about revoking the various clean air acts in the UK? Who doesn’t want a good few days of smog in all our cities with the associated impact on asthmatics, lung cancer, heart disease and more. And what about asbestos? Yep let’s get that back in usage and remove the protection required.
I, personally, am keen on cleaning chimneys by sending children up them; letting raw sewage go into our water outlets (big up the UK’s water companies for that); and using canaries to protect miners from carbon monoxide. Obvs!
So, if you like ‘that’ man (and similar) then please don’t come complaining when your day is ruined by vehicle fumes so bad that you can hardly breath, 35 degrees of heat in the spring, things floating in the water that you’d rather not see, even longer hospital waiting lists and reduced life expectancy.
If however, you don’t wish to behave like Donald the recidivist luddite and instead enjoy clean air, better health, protection for you and your loved ones, and improving the world then perhaps, just perhaps, it’s best to ignore the old boy in charge of the US. But what can you do at a practical level?
Consumer choice in business can be powerful in delivering a message – Therefore by choosing to buy your products and services from businesses that believe in social accountability, long term responsibility, improving our world and challenging intolerance you are sticking it up to the tax evading US tech.
In our sector, if you are looking to move away from American products there are plenty of European, South Korean and Japanese suppliers of IT services and products.
For example the ethical Dutch smart phone company Fairphone has an excellent, repairable, battery replaceable Android phone. Or if you wish to move away from Google or Bing then the UK search engine Mojeek.com who are 100% independent, or the German search engine Ecosia.org who has planted almost 250 million trees are good options, and maybe move to the French free libreoffice.org to replace Microsoft or Google office services. And for cloud comms then how about our partners E-LG, a wonderful South Korean tech business that provides cutting edge cloud phone services, or if you want a smart phone then South Korea’s Samsung.
So let’s be more progressive, escape the grip of the US tech bros, and leave old Donald breathing in the smog trying to remember what his favourite shade of FAKE TAN is and working out who else he can start a war with!
